Ducks Overboard

So many great places to take this book!
1. Use as a mentor text.  Students write first person as an inanimate object.
2.  Start discussing issues in the world like plastic in the ocean.  In the back of the book it tells the reader about facts, ocean currents, and how we can help.
3.  Use for geography and follow the ducks.

When Macy is asked to tell her classmates about her family, she focuses on their different kinds of hair.

This story has certain words that are in blue and are bold.  Why do you think the author chose to highlight those words?

What is a family affair for your family?  (cleaning, playing, gardening)

Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners by Laurie Keller

I love this book!  It is written in a humerous, non-didactic way.  I am going to use this book at the beginning of the year.

Culture: Lists of ways to say different things in different languages
(like "Thank You" and "Excuse Me")
Ideas: Create own manner book as a class
(Story Bird?)
How authors get ideas: One theme

From Amazon: A child dreams of flowers, flowers dream of butterflies, and butterflies dream as well in a serene, rhythmic bedtime story that circles back to a satisfying ending.

Child, tell me, of what do you dream?
I dream of a flower in a sweet green meadow.
Flower, tell me, of what do you dream?
I dream of a butterfly with petal-soft wings. .

The Colors of Us by Karen Katz

In this story, a girl compares the color of skin of her friends and family to different items, like chocolate and coffee.

Idea/strategy: Do this same idea with hair color or eye color (The Colors of Us, The Colors of Ox Bow, The Colors of Team 174, etc.)

I love books so much!  My particular loves are children's books and professional books that catch my fancy.  One thing that keeps me happy and sane as a teacher is being able to get tons of books from the library and share them with my students.  I have tried different ways to keep track of my books, but here's another attempt.  We'll se if I can make this one fly!
