Little Doctor and the Fearless Beast by Sophie Gilmore

I love this book for so many reasons!  Gilmore has created a fantasy world where a small girl is a doctor among the crocodiles.  Her kindness and bravery are admirable.  In the end, her patience and compassion win the day!

The Bear report by thyra heder

This book starts out with a shoddily done report on bears.  The main character writes:
"They are big."
"They eat things." and
"They are mean."

She is in for a surprise when a polar bear shows up in her room and declares that not all polar bears are mean.  He then takes  her out a tour of his habitat.  The pictures are stunning.  This would be a great book to show students what NOT to do for a report and what TO DO for a report.  The story is touching and informational.

Assalamu Alaikum by by Harris J and Ward Jenkins

This is a book that was created from a song by Harris J.  It is more of a poem than a story.  It shows how to be kind and live your life to the fullest.  Assalamu Alaikum is Arabic for "peace be upon you."

Writing ideas: Rewrite the chorus.  What are other words that mean "peace be upon you".  What does "peace be upon you" mean to you?

I love this book!  It is written in a humerous, non-didactic way.  I am going to use this book at the beginning of the year.

Culture: Lists of ways to say different things in different languages
(like "Thank You" and "Excuse Me")
Ideas: Create own manner book as a class
(Story Bird?)
How authors get ideas: One theme

What a touching story this is.  The plot line is intriguing and students can learn a bit about Hanukkah, too.  A boy is going to America and after a crash, finds himself alone on an iceberg.  A bear comes and their relationship develops.  This book talks about miracles and has a great surprise ending.

Themes: sacrifice, positivity, friendship, and courage

I love books so much!  My particular loves are children's books and professional books that catch my fancy.  One thing that keeps me happy and sane as a teacher is being able to get tons of books from the library and share them with my students.  I have tried different ways to keep track of my books, but here's another attempt.  We'll se if I can make this one fly!
