The Circles All Around Usby Brad Montague and Kristi Montague  | May 18, 2021

This rhyming book talks about how we start with a small circle (being the individual) and how our circles grow as we get older and meet more people.

One thing I like about it is the author writes that it can be uncomfortable when we stretch our circle out to people who are different than us.

Writing idea: Students draw their circles, but then have some circles (people) outside of themselves that they want to learn about.

What a precious book!  Here's the video, because you really must watch it:

I am totally going to link this to our daily gratitude lists.
"The small things are treasures.  True treasures.  There are no greater treasures than the little things. One is enough to enrich the moment.  Just one is enough to change the world."

Emile by Kurt Fetterer

I adore this book!   Fetterer is the author and illustrator.  The illustrations are bold and beautiful in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.  There is even a cameo of Van Gogh in the book.

Emile is a cat that lives at home with his couple.  Their life is simple and he is happy.

But one day he sees a butterfly outside of his window and simply must go exploring.  He meets up with other cats and finds much color on his journey.

Once he returns home, color comes into the home.  "Emile had brought color into the house."  The man got paints and paintbrushes, the woman bought flowers and the house was never grey again.

The incredible Book eating boy by oliver jeffers

Oliver Jeffers is one of my favorite authors.  His stories are interesting and creative and always have a message.

In the Incredible Book Eating Boy, our main character loves to eat books.  But one day he has eaten too many to digest and realizes that he needs to stop eating books.  He doesn't know what to do at first, because his book-eating habit was strong.  He decided to pick up a book instead and was amazed by what he could learn by reading a book instead of eating it!

Jeffers' illustrations are rich in texture and the layout is intriguing.

I love this book for so many reasons!  Gilmore has created a fantasy world where a small girl is a doctor among the crocodiles.  Her kindness and bravery are admirable.  In the end, her patience and compassion win the day!

Elena's Serenade

Elena wants to be a glass blower, but her dad says that she is too little and only boys are glass blowers.  Elena takes off on a journey to become a glass blower.  She meets different animals along the way.  She has brought a pipe with her and makes music as she travels and helps the animal.

This book has BEAUTIFUL illustrations and the writing is lyrical.   Possible themes are overcoming obstacles, helping others, finding your strengths, and achieving your goal.  I highly recommend this book!

I love books so much!  My particular loves are children's books and professional books that catch my fancy.  One thing that keeps me happy and sane as a teacher is being able to get tons of books from the library and share them with my students.  I have tried different ways to keep track of my books, but here's another attempt.  We'll se if I can make this one fly!
